On July 22 and 23, Galax, VA will host the annual Smoke on the Mountain BBQ Championship, Virginia’s official state BBQ championship.
Smoke on the Mountain – The Food
Although Galax is best known for its old-time and bluegrass music, the city becomes a BBQ haven of sorts every third weekend in July.
Many of the top teams on the national BBQ circuit compete in Galax. Winning in Galax earns the winners a spot in the The Memphis BBQ Network World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. The total purse is $10,000. The teams compete in categories like whole hog, pork ribs, pork shoulder, sauce and the “Anything Butt” catch-all category.
In addition to the competition for professional BBQ cooks, local amateurs will compete in the “Patio Porkers” division. This gives these local cooks a chance to enter the big leagues next year as professional teams.
Stick around after the judging ends Saturday and visit the team booths to get free samples.
Smoke on the Mountain – The Music
Since the competition is held in Galax, known for its bluegrass and old-time music, there’s gotta be some music to go along with the delicious food. This year is no exception. Local bands will be performing Friday evening and all Saturday afternoon and evening. The Robby Danison Band will be performing 4-7pm Saturday.
