Villa Appalaccia is a beautiful Italian villa just off the Parkway not too far from Fancy Gap. It’s a great setting to enjoy some good wine and food. The high elevation makes for a great place to escape the summer heat.
Though I’d been in the neighborhood many times — in Floyd, at Chateau Morrisette, up and down the Parkway from Roanoke to Fancy Gap, down into then up out of Rock Castle Gorge — I’d never visited Villa Appalaccia. Sitting and enjoying the wine, food, and views, I wondered why I’d waited so long. It’s definitely worth visiting.
The winery is off the Parkway in its own little Italian-style world.
The Food at Villa Appalaccia
My wife and I liked the food very much. It was surprisingly good. They serve various Panini sandwiches. I really enjoyed the Italian Panini. My wife liked the Il Gallo, a chicken and avocado sandwich. They also offer cheese and hummus plates daily with bread, fruit, olives, charcuterie and local cheeses.
Pizza Capana
Pizza is served on Sundays. The pizza is baked in a wood fired oven in a little building set apart for this purpose. The owners took suggestions for the building name from the staff. The winning name was “Pizza Capana”, which is Italian for “Pizza Hut”!
Live Music and Other Events at Villa Appalaccia
They host live music in another, separate courtyard. Check their events page for details. The facility may be rented for weddings and other events.
Bocce Ball
If you’re interested in something a little more active than food, wine and views, you can try your hand at Bocce Ball.
